Hyoudo Riki is just an ordinary guy who likes to wear a tiger mask while Kung Fu fighting, which means he fits in real well at BATTLE ROYAL HIGH SCHOOL!
Unfortunately for Riki, he's the doppelganger in our world of Byoudo, Master of the Dark Realm, and when a dimension gate opens between the two worlds, the evil Fairy Master tricks Byoudo into making an attempt to conquer out beautiful, and better lit, world.
Now poor Riki is semi-possessed by his opposite number, and the minions of the Fairy Master are mutating his classmates into hideous lustful monsters. To make matters worse, all the inter-dimensional commotion has attracted the attention of a sword-happy exorcist and the heroic Zankan of the Space-Time Police!
Which all means that Riki is about to take one bitch of a mid-term. The course is survival, and forget "Pass/Fail." This test is graded "Live/Die!"

Where it came from
Battle Royal High School, released in 1987, is an original video animation (OVA) produced during the height of the 1980s direct-to-video boom in Japan. Based on the manga by Shin-ichi Hosomichi, the narrative follows a transfer student who possesses psychic powers, thrusting him into a supernatural conflict between demons and government forces. The project was conceived as an exercise in high-octane genre blending, combining elements of action, horror, and science fiction typical of the era's adventurous animation style.
The production was managed by the studio AnimEigo, which later became instrumental in the distribution of classic anime titles to North American audiences. The animation design leaned heavily into the gritty, expressive aesthetic popular in late 80s adult-oriented OVAs, utilizing bold character outlines and dramatic lighting to emphasize the protagonist's kinetic combat scenes. Upon its release, it was recognized as a quintessential example of the underground fantasy subgenre, appealing to viewers who enjoyed the era's trend of darker, more violent animated storytelling.
