Where it came from
Bean Bandit was released in 2021 as a crowd-funded original video animation, serving as a spiritual successor to Kenichi Sonoda's cult classic Gunsmith Cats and the original Riding Bean OVA from 1989. Produced by the studio Creators in Pack, the project was launched via a successful Kickstarter campaign that sought to celebrate the legacy of the original fast-paced action series. The production aimed to honor the gritty, high-octane aesthetic of the eighties while utilizing modern animation techniques to depict the titular character's daring exploits behind the wheel.
The character design remains deeply rooted in Kenichi Sonoda's iconic style, maintaining the distinct visual identity that defined his earlier works. The creative team focused on preserving the kinetic energy of the high-speed chases and the meticulous attention to mechanical detail that fans of the franchise expected. Upon its release, the project was received as a nostalgic achievement for long-time admirers of the source material, successfully bridging the gap between legacy anime aesthetics and contemporary production standards.
