Where it came from
Begone Dull Care was released in 1949 by the National Film Board of Canada, directed by the husband-and-wife animation team Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart. The film was born out of McLaren’s experimental approach to filmmaking, specifically his technique of painting and scratching directly onto 35mm film stock, bypassing the camera entirely to achieve a rhythmic synchronization with music.
The animation is set to a lively jazz score performed by the Oscar Peterson Trio. McLaren and Lambart sought to visualize the fluidity of sound through abstract shapes and vibrant, kinetic patterns. Upon its release, the film was celebrated for its innovative methodology and its seamless fusion of improvised music with visual art, eventually becoming a seminal work in the history of abstract and experimental animation.
