Behind a Smile

Behind a Smile is a notable limited edition print created by the British street artist Banksy. Released in 2003 as part of his early print series, the work emerged from a period when the artist was cementing his signature style of juxtaposing dark, subversive themes with recognizable cultural icons to critique consumerist society and authority.

The design features a stark, high-contrast depiction of a smiling character that serves as a commentary on the facade of public persona and the underlying tension of modern life. It reflects Banksy’s roots in the Bristol underground art scene, utilizing a stencil aesthetic that emphasizes bold lines and minimal color, a technical approach that helped define the visual language of the 2000s street art movement and garnered significant interest from both underground critics and contemporary galleries.
