Where it came from
Before You Wake Up is a notable example of the contemporary digital animation output from FLAT STUDIO, a Tokyo-based creative collective founded by the illustrator loundraw. The studio was established to bridge the gap between illustration and animation, focusing on a distinct aesthetic that emphasizes atmospheric lighting and emotional narrative depth. This project functions as an original net animation (ONA) short, designed to showcase the studio’s signature style of blending detailed, evocative backgrounds with fluid, character-focused storytelling.
The creative direction of the piece reflects loundraw’s personal artistic philosophy, which often explores themes of introspection, solitude, and the ephemeral nature of moments. By prioritizing visual world-building and subtle character expressions, the film aims to elicit a specific mood rather than relying on complex dialogue or traditional episodic structures. Since its release, the work has been recognized within animation circles for its technical precision and its role in establishing FLAT STUDIO as a prominent force in high-quality, independent anime production.
