Where it came from
Beniimo Musume, or Crimson Sweet Potato Girl, was a charming mascot character developed by NHK Okinawa to promote the cultural and agricultural heritage of the region. Designed to celebrate the beni-imo, a staple purple yam iconic to Okinawan cuisine, the character was used across local programming and educational campaigns to engage younger audiences with regional identity and tradition.
The character features a distinct, vibrant aesthetic reflecting the bright colors of the Okinawan landscape. While NHK creates numerous mascots for its regional branches, Beniimo Musume was particularly noted for its lighthearted personality and its role in bridging the gap between historical agricultural practices and modern broadcast media. It remains a recognizable symbol of the network's commitment to localizing its content for prefectural viewers.
