Where it came from
Benkei tai Ushiwaka, or Benkei vs. Ushiwaka, is a 1939 Japanese jidaigeki film directed by Hideo Sekigawa. Produced during a period when the Japanese film industry was increasingly focused on nationalist and historical narratives, the film adapts the classic legend of the warrior monk Benkei and his fateful encounter with the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune, then known as Ushiwaka, on the Gojo Bridge in Kyoto.
The film is notable for its dramatization of one of Japan’s most enduring folklore figures. While early cinematic depictions of the Gojo Bridge encounter relied heavily on theatrical conventions inherited from Kabuki, this production sought to blend traditional stylized action with the emerging technical capabilities of pre-war Japanese cinema. It was received as a standard entry in the popular period drama genre of the era, serving both as entertainment and as a reinforcement of cultural myths regarding martial prowess and loyalty.
