Where it came from
Released in 2013, The Advent serves as the final chapter in the Golden Age Arc film trilogy, which sought to condense Kentaro Miura’s expansive dark fantasy manga into a cinematic format. Produced by Studio 4°C, these films were created to introduce a new generation to the Guts and Griffith saga, blending traditional cel-style animation with contemporary 3D CGI to depict the intense, visceral combat central to the source material. The project aimed to capture the brutal transition from medieval military drama to the supernatural horror that defines the series' tone.
The film adaptation was directed by Toshiyuki Kubooka, who focused on maintaining the grim, atmospheric weight of the manga while navigating the technical challenges of bringing Miura’s highly detailed art to the screen. Upon its release, the trilogy received a mixed but generally appreciative response from fans and critics, who praised the ambitious scope of the Eclipse sequence while noting the inherent difficulty of compressing hundreds of manga chapters into three feature-length films. It remains a notable entry in the franchise for its bold attempt to modernize a classic work of seinen dark fantasy.
