Better back then

Better Back Then was produced by the Geidai Animation program at Tokyo University of the Arts, a renowned institution for nurturing experimental animation talent. The film serves as a creative capstone project, emerging from a rigorous academic environment that encourages students to push the boundaries of traditional narrative structures and visual techniques. It reflects the distinctive, highly curated aesthetic often found in university-led independent animation, where the focus remains on personal expression and technical experimentation rather than commercial appeal.

The film's visual design and thematic composition prioritize a contemplative atmosphere, typical of the short-form storytelling favored by Geidai graduates. By blending evocative imagery with a nuanced approach to memory and time, the work showcases the director's intent to explore the ephemeral nature of the past. Upon its release within the festival circuit and university screenings, it was received as a sensitive piece of animation craft, noted by industry observers for its stylistic restraint and the technical proficiency typical of the program's output.
