In late-nineteenth-century England, the Noah's Ark Circus enlivens the city of London with their grandeur and spectacular stunts. However, children are mysteriously disappearing from the town in a manner correlating to the troupe's movement. The Queen, then, sends her notorious Watchdog, Ciel Phantomhive, on an investigative mission to retrieve the missing children. Ciel and his demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis, infiltrate the circus, disguised as team members, to study and possibly unearth its ulterior motive.
This arc immediately follows the Curry Contest Arc in the manga, which ended at episode 15 in the first season of the anime.

Where it came from
Black Butler: Book of Circus was released in 2014 as the third anime adaptation of Yana Toboso’s popular manga series. Produced by A-1 Pictures, the series was designed to diverge from the original anime's non-canonical second season by returning directly to the source material. It specifically adapts the Noah's Ark Circus arc, which is widely considered a turning point in the manga for its darker, more character-focused exploration of the relationship between Ciel Phantomhive and his butler, Sebastian Michaelis.
The production sought to emphasize the uncanny atmosphere of a Victorian-era traveling troupe while maintaining the refined, gothic aesthetic established by the manga. Directed by Noriyuki Abe, the animation style leaned into intricate costume designs and stylized character movements to reflect the circus performers' dual nature. The series was well received by long-term fans for its heightened fidelity to the original text and its ability to balance the show’s signature mix of macabre storytelling and dark, sophisticated humor.
