Where it came from
The Tenchuu Girls special is a promotional animation produced by Kinema Citrus to accompany the Black Bullet light novel series, which was written by Shiden Kanzaki and illustrated by Saki Ukai. Released in 2014, the short served as an extension of the franchise's multimedia marketing strategy, leveraging the popularity of the girls' idol group persona depicted within the series' world to build engagement alongside the main television anime adaptation.
The design of the Tenchuu Girls reflects the quintessential high-energy aesthetic of mid-2010s anime idol culture, characterized by vibrant color palettes and choreographed musical sequences. By tasking Kinema Citrus with this side project, the producers aimed to provide fans with a playful, lighthearted contrast to the often grim and post-apocalyptic narrative of the main series, resulting in a niche but well-received piece of character-driven collateral.
