Where it came from
Black Butler: Book of Murder is a two-part original video animation series produced by A-1 Pictures, released in 2014 to adapt the Phantomhive Manor Murders story arc from Yana Toboso’s original manga. The production was intended to bridge the gap between previous television seasons, offering a self-contained mystery that leaned into the series' Gothic Victorian aesthetic and dark comedic tone.
The animation design sought to maintain the high production standards of the televised anime while focusing on the intricate, period-accurate costume work and claustrophobic interior settings central to the manor-mystery genre. Upon its release, the OVA was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the source material and its ability to condense a complex, multi-layered detective narrative into a concise, visually polished format.
