In the medical profession, there is a name spoken in hushed tones, of an unlicensed genius physician who can save lives—for a price. His name is Black Jack, and he is a dashing, moody figure, caped in black, a Harlock of medicine, a man who lives by no rules other than his own—and the Hippocratic Oath. A man who would defy the will of God himself in the name of preserving life.

Where it came from
The 1993 Black Jack original video animation series was produced by Tezuka Productions and released to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Osamu Tezuka’s birth. The series aimed to adapt the darker, more mature themes of Tezuka’s iconic medical manga into a high-quality cinematic format. By focusing on the mysterious rogue surgeon Kuroo Hazama, the OVA series sought to explore complex ethical dilemmas and the human condition, moving beyond simple episodic storytelling to provide a more nuanced look at the source material.
The character designs for the 1993 production were overseen by Akio Sugino, who sought to maintain the integrity of Tezuka's classic style while imbuing the animation with a sophisticated, moody atmosphere appropriate for the 90s aesthetic. This transition from the page to the screen was met with significant critical approval, as the series successfully preserved the gravitas and medical tension that defined the manga. It remains a hallmark of 1990s animation, noted for its consistent quality and respectful dedication to the legacy of its creator.
