Black Jack 21

Black Jack 21 was produced in 2006 by Tezuka Productions as a direct sequel to the 2004 Black Jack television series. It was released to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Osamu Tezuka's original manga, which first debuted in 1973. The series was created to dive deeper into the mysterious origins of the titular surgeon, Black Jack, moving away from the episodic nature of its predecessor to focus on a serialized narrative arc concerning the doctor's past and the shadow organization known as 'Black Star'.

The character design remains faithful to Osamu Tezuka’s iconic style, maintaining the expressive, rounded aesthetic that defined his body of work. Directed by Shinichi Nishizawa, the production sought to modernize the dark, philosophical themes of the original source material while preserving its humanist core. It was received as a respectful homage to Tezuka’s legacy, praised for its exploration of medical ethics and the complexity of its protagonist, though it faced comparisons to the more standalone episodic structure of the early 2000s adaptation.
