Black Magic M-66

Black Magic M-66 was produced in 1987 by AIC as an original video animation, adapted from the manga by Masamune Shirow. The project was conceived as a high-octane sci-fi thriller, arriving at a time when the OVA market in Japan was beginning to flourish, allowing creators to explore mature themes and high-quality animation techniques outside the constraints of television broadcast. The narrative follows an experiment involving two prototype autonomous androids that escape, leading to a desperate military pursuit.

The production is notable for the direct involvement of Masamune Shirow, who served as a co-director and screenwriter, ensuring the adaptation remained faithful to his vision of tactical realism and mechanical design. The M-66 units are iconic for their blend of human-like infiltration capabilities and lethal combat programming. While the animation style reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1980s industry standards, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts for its brisk pacing and influence on subsequent tech-noir animation works.
