Okajima Rokuro - now known almost exclusively as 'Rock' - was once a typical, put-upon Japanese businessman. Then, on a routine business trip, he was kidnapped and ransomed by the Lagoon Company: a band of mercenary pirates operating out of the crime-riddled city of Roanapur. Abandoned by his bosses, he joined the Lagoon Company. Now he must try and stay afloat amongst the ever-shifting politics of the criminal underworld, while simultaneously avoiding death at the hands of his quick-tempered, gun-toting co-worker, 'Two Hand' Revy.

Where it came from
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage was produced by Studio Madhouse and released in 2006 as the direct continuation of the first season of the Black Lagoon anime adaptation. Based on the manga series by Rei Hiroe, the production sought to expand upon the gritty, high-octane narrative of the Lagoon Company, a mercenary group operating out of the lawless Southeast Asian port city of Roanapur. The series maintains the intense, cinematic aesthetic characteristic of director Sunao Katabuchi’s work, focusing on themes of moral ambiguity and the intersection of criminal underworlds.
The animation design was crafted to reflect the visceral intensity of the source material, with a heavy emphasis on realistic firearms and dark, atmospheric environments. Upon its release, the series was received as a definitive entry in the seinen action genre, noted for its sharp dialogue and complex character dynamics. It solidified Madhouse’s reputation for adapting mature, edgy content, and it remains a touchstone for viewers interested in stylized depictions of global crime and mercenary culture.
