Where it came from
Black Lion was released in 1992 as a direct-to-video original animation (OVA) project produced by ADV Films during the burgeoning era of anime localization in the West. It serves as a creative reimagining or loose adaptation of the Go Nagai manga, drawing heavily on the dark, visceral aesthetic characteristic of early 90s dark fantasy and mecha-adjacent storytelling.
The animation design focuses on a gritty, atmospheric visual language that prioritizes intense combat choreography and occult themes over traditional heroic narratives. Upon its release, it was received as a niche entry in the catalogue of ADV Films, appealing primarily to fans of the hyper-violent, avant-garde animation styles that defined the import market of the decade.
