Blue Butterfly

The Blue Butterfly pattern is a hallmark of the SOHBI Corporation, a Japanese ceramics studio renowned for its refinement of traditional European aesthetic sensibilities within a modern industrial framework. Developed during the late 20th century, this series was conceived to capture the delicate, ephemeral beauty of nature, utilizing high-quality bone china as a canvas. The design reflects a stylistic bridge between the meticulous botanical illustrations of the Victorian era and the clean, minimalist lines typical of Japanese production techniques.

The pattern was executed by SOHBI’s internal design team, who sought to create tableware that felt both timeless and ethereal. By employing precise decal application processes, they achieved a soft, painterly effect that mimics watercolor, focusing on the vivid, translucent blues of the butterfly wings contrasted against a stark white porcelain body. Upon release, the series found favor among collectors of fine china who appreciated its understated elegance and the durability that SOHBI’s kiln-firing methods afforded the delicate motifs.
