BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE R

Blue Gale Xabungle Side R is a 2025 ONA produced by Studio Sunrise, created as a modern reinterpretation of the classic 1982 mecha anime Combat Mecha Xabungle. This project serves as a stylistic evolution of the franchise, leaning into contemporary animation techniques to update the gritty, post-apocalyptic aesthetic originally envisioned by director Yoshiyuki Tomino. The production aims to honor the series' unique 'civilian' mecha design philosophy while introducing the kinetic, high-speed movement synonymous with modern action-oriented storytelling.

The design of the 'Side R' iteration prioritizes a streamlined silhouette, departing from the clunky, industrial look of the original Walker Machines to better suit fast-paced choreography. Studio Sunrise positioned this release to bridge the gap between long-time fans of the 80s aesthetic and a new generation of viewers, focusing on mechanical density and fluid environment interaction. Its reception has been characterized by its visual departure from the hand-drawn grit of the original, serving as a clean, high-fidelity reimagining of the classic Western-inspired space opera.
