Where it came from
Blue Reflection Ray was released in 2021 as an original net animation, serving as the first major expansion of the Blue Reflection franchise originally established by Gust and Koei Tecmo. The series was developed as a companion to the video game Second Light, aiming to broaden the emotional, magical-girl-centric narrative universe established in the 2017 title. It centers on the contrasting personalities of Hiori Hirahara and Ruka Hanari as they navigate the complexities of teenage emotion and the mysterious Common dimension.
The animation was produced by J.C.Staff and directed by Risako Yoshida. The design philosophy maintained the aesthetic signature of series character designer Mel Kishida, known for his delicate, ethereal character illustrations. Upon its release, the series received attention for its atmospheric visuals and integration of the franchise's themes of empathy and reflection, though it faced critique regarding its pacing and the challenge of translating the interactive, slow-burn nature of the source games into a linear narrative format.
