Blue Seed

Blue Seed was produced by Production I.G and Ashi Productions in 1994, emerging during a period when the studio was gaining recognition for its work in the science fiction and fantasy genres. Adapted from the manga series by Yuzo Takada, the narrative blends Japanese mythology with modern urban settings, centering on the Kushinada lineage and the battle against the Aragami. This thematic juxtaposition of ancient folklore and contemporary society was a hallmark of 1990s anime production, reflecting a cultural interest in reinterpreting traditional legends for a new generation of viewers.

The character designs for the series were handled by Kazuchika Kise, who sought to balance the supernatural elements of the mythology with the aesthetic trends common to mid-nineties animation. The series was met with a positive reception for its atmospheric world-building and character dynamics, helping to solidify Production I.G's reputation. It remains a representative example of how animation studios of that era successfully translated long-form manga into television serials, maintaining a dedicated following within the anime community decades after its initial broadcast.
