"I want to experience a love that sparkles!" Arriving from Nagasaki with her wishful mantra is Tamaki Tsuru, who in high school could think only about volleyball. Things don’t begin well, however, when she looks for an extracurricular club to join and proceeds to immediately ding a glider at aviation club tryouts ending up having to work it off. She is initially disillusioned with campus life. Then Kuramochi, the club leader and glider pilot, takes Tamaki under his wing, and from the moment he takes her up for a flight in a glider, Tamaki becomes a captive of the vast beauty of the skies.

Where it came from
Blue Thermal was released in 2022 by Telecom Animation Film, adapted from the manga series by Kana Ozawa. The film captures the unique collegiate experience of the aviation club at Aonagi University, focusing on the sport of competitive soaring. It serves as a grounded exploration of academic pressure and the pursuit of passion in a sporting setting, distinct from typical high-stakes action anime by emphasizing the technical beauty of gliding.
The production design team sought to accurately recreate the aerodynamics and physics of sailplane flight, working closely with actual aviation enthusiasts to ensure the sequences were believable. Masaki Tachibana directed the project, aiming to bridge the gap between a coming-of-age drama and a sports documentary. Upon its debut, the film was noted for its clean aesthetic and its specialized focus on a niche collegiate hobby, receiving appreciation for its departure from traditional combat-oriented narratives.
