In the 21st century, the existence of animal-humans came to light after being hidden in the darkness of history. Michiru lived life as a normal human, until one day she suddenly turns into a tanuki-human. She runs away and takes refuge in a special city area called "Anima City" that was set up 10 years ago for animal-humans to be able to live as themselves. There Michiru meets Shirou, a wolf-human who hates humans. Through Shirou, Michiru starts to learn about the worries, lifestyle, and joys of the animal-humans. As Michiru and Shirou try to learn why Michiru suddenly turned into an animal-human, they unexpectedly get wrapped up in a large incident.

Where it came from
BNA: Brand New Animal was produced by Studio Trigger and released in 2020 as an original net animation series. Directed by Yoh Yoshinari, the series was conceived as an exploration of prejudice and identity within a world where humans and beastmen coexist, centered on the city of Anima City. The narrative draws inspiration from social themes and multicultural friction, utilizing a vibrant, high-contrast aesthetic that has become synonymous with the studio's house style.
The character designs were overseen by Yoshinari, who sought to capture a dynamic and fluid visual language that emphasized the supernatural agility of the beastmen characters. Upon its release, the show was noted for its kinetic animation and bold color palettes, receiving praise for its world-building while sparking discussion regarding its metaphorical approach to real-world sociological conflicts.
