Where it came from
Boarding School Juliet, released in 2018, is an anime adaptation of the manga series written and illustrated by Yosuke Kaneda. The series was produced by the studio LIDENFILMS and directed by Seiki Takuno, aiming to translate Kaneda’s Romeo and Juliet-inspired narrative into a vibrant romantic comedy. The production focused on the high-stakes tension between two rival boarding school factions, the Touwa Republic and the Principality of West, mirroring the classic Shakespearean tropes with a stylized academic backdrop.
Upon its release, the series was received as a lighthearted genre piece that balanced action sequences with traditional romantic tropes. LIDENFILMS chose a visual palette intended to emphasize the distinction between the two rival houses, utilizing character design choices that leaned into the expressive, exaggerated aesthetics common in contemporary shonen romantic comedies. It is remembered primarily for its central premise of clandestine romance, a theme that resonated with fans of the original serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine.
