An educational film about losing hope in children in Japan. In the movie's example, how it is bad it is to say another child "doesn't stand a chance" or "don't think too much of them, they won't amount to anything" because of their upbringing or background or single action they did.

Where it came from
Boku to Gaku: Ano Natsu no Monogatari, or 'Gaku and Me: A Summer Story,' was produced by Toei Animation and released as a direct-to-video OVA in 1990. It serves as a gentle, slice-of-life narrative centered on the bond between a young boy and his dog, Gaku. The project reflects the period's interest in heartwarming, educational-adjacent animation aimed at family audiences, focusing on emotional resonance rather than high-octane action.
The production leans into a classic late-Showa, early-Heisei aesthetic characterized by soft, watercolor-inspired backgrounds and a focus on mundane, nostalgic childhood experiences. While it is a lesser-known title in the extensive Toei catalog, it is frequently cited by enthusiasts of 1990s anime for its restrained storytelling and evocative depiction of Japanese summers, standing as a quiet counterpoint to the more commercially dominant franchises of the era.
