Tokiwa was the apartment complex where a group of stellar artists lived in 1953.
Hiro Terada, Motoo Abiko and Hiroshi Fujimoto, Shotaro Ishinomori and Fujio Akatsuka shared the trials and tribulations of being struggling young artists and writers with no money and no luck with editors or girls, with a spirit of insane youthful enthusiasm that enabled them to survive the lean years and emerge as stars of the manga firmament.

Where it came from
Bokura Mangaka: Tokiwasou Monogatari was produced by Toei Animation as a television special in 1981. It serves as a semi-autobiographical dramatization of the legendary Tokiwa-so apartment building, which served as a creative incubator for some of the most influential figures in Japanese manga history, including Osamu Tezuka, Motoo Abiko, and Hiroo Abiko, who wrote under the collective pseudonym Fujiko Fujio.
The animation focuses on the communal struggle and artistic fervor of these young creators during the 1950s. The production captures a pivotal era in the industry, reflecting the transition of manga from pulp entertainment to a sophisticated storytelling medium. By the time of its release in 1981, the legacy of Tokiwa-so was firmly cemented in pop culture history, and the special was received as a nostalgic tribute to the pioneers who shaped the medium.
