Bokurano

Bokurano, adapted from Mohiro Kitoh’s seinen manga, was produced by Studio GONZO and aired in 2007. The series follows a group of children who inadvertently contract a life-or-death game involving the piloting of a giant mecha to protect Earth, only to discover the heavy price their victory demands. It emerged during a period when GONZO was experimenting with dark, subversive takes on traditional mecha tropes, intentionally shifting away from the heroics of the genre toward a grounded, nihilistic psychological drama.

The character design and visual direction were aimed at creating a jarring contrast between the fantastical nature of the mecha battles and the mundane, often tragic personal lives of the young protagonists. Upon its release, the series was received with significant critical interest for its uncompromising tonal shift from standard animation fare, though it remains a polarizing work due to its bleak narrative philosophy and the stark departures from the source material's specific pacing.
