Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations premiered in 2017 as the direct successor to Masashi Kishimoto's globally influential Naruto franchise. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the series was created to bridge the transition from the end of the original saga to a new era, focusing on the son of the seventh Hokage as he navigates the changing dynamics of the ninja world. The project emerged from a desire to maintain the cultural momentum of the Naruto universe while introducing a narrative shift toward modern ninja technology and the evolving challenges of the next generation.

The character designs and storytelling were developed under the supervision of Ukyo Kodachi and Mikio Ikemoto, with Kishimoto serving as editorial supervisor. The visual style aims to balance the established aesthetic of the Hidden Leaf Village with sleeker, more contemporary character designs that reflect the peaceful, industrialized period following the Fourth Great Ninja War. Upon its release, the series received a wide range of feedback, often evaluated through the lens of its predecessor’s legacy, though it successfully cultivated its own dedicated audience through its exploration of parental expectations and evolving technological threats.
