Burn Up Excess

Burn Up Excess was produced by AIC in 1998 as a direct successor to the earlier Burn Up W original video animation series. It was developed during a period when the studio was experimenting with high-energy, episodic action-comedy hybrids, aiming to blend police procedural tropes with the aesthetic sensibilities common in late nineties anime. The series focuses on the members of the Warrior team, a specialized unit within the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, as they navigate chaotic assignments characterized by both mundane bureaucracy and exaggerated criminal threats.

The character designs, handled by Kazuhiro Soeta, leaned into a polished, vibrant style that became a hallmark of the era's lighthearted action titles. While the series was received as a standard piece of genre entertainment, it is often noted by historians for its transition from the more mature, dark tones of its predecessor to a brighter, more slapstick-oriented approach. It remains a representative example of the studio's mid-nineties output, functioning as a standalone series that highlights the transition toward more stylized, character-driven storytelling in television animation.
