Where it came from
Buta Thunder is a character from the Japanese series Kinnikuman, created by the duo Yudetamago in 1979. The character is part of the extensive roster of Chojin, or supermen, that populate the manga's wrestling-centric narrative. The series gained massive popularity during the 1980s, sparking a vast range of merchandise, including the highly collectible Kinnikuman Kinkeshi rubber figures, which were initially distributed as vending machine toys.
The design of characters like Buta Thunder reflects the creative, often surreal aesthetic of the late Showa-era shonen manga. Yudetamago combined traditional wrestling tropes with whimsical, imaginative character designs to build a unique visual identity for the franchise. The figures were intended as affordable, accessible playthings for children, and their simple, monochromatic aesthetic has since become an iconic element of Japanese toy history, highly sought after by modern collectors for its nostalgia and design simplicity.
