Call of the Night

Call of the Night, or Yofukashi no Uta, premiered in 2022 as an adaptation of the manga series by Kotoyama. Produced by the animation studio LIDENFILMS and directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, the series sought to capture the atmosphere of nocturnal urban life, heavily emphasizing aesthetic lighting and a synth-wave-inspired score. The project emerged from a period of interest in introspective, character-driven supernatural dramas, focusing on the burgeoning relationship between a middle-school student struggling with insomnia and a free-spirited vampire.

The visual identity of the anime is distinguished by its vibrant, neon-drenched color palette and stylized silhouettes, which were intended to evoke the stillness and anonymity of a sleeping city. The production team collaborated with the artist Creepy Nuts to develop the series' musical identity, which became closely linked to the show's reception. Critics and viewers generally received the series as a unique stylistic achievement, particularly noting how the direction effectively translated the manga's moody, atmospheric tone into a fluid, immersive animation experience.
