Where it came from
Calpis Hakkou Monogatari, released in 2008, serves as a promotional short animation produced to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the iconic Japanese beverage brand, Calpis. The piece was created to deepen the brand's connection with consumers by presenting the history of its fermentation process and its origin story in a whimsical, accessible format that reflects the company's longstanding commitment to health and longevity.
The animation features character designs and a visual style synonymous with high-quality Japanese commercial animation of the late 2000s, utilizing a soft, pastel-toned aesthetic intended to evoke nostalgia and warmth. Produced by the studio TMS Entertainment, the ONA was well-received as an elegant piece of branded storytelling that prioritized narrative charm over overt advertising, successfully reinforcing the brand's image as a staple of Japanese domestic life.
