Some people suddenly find religion, but for 16-year-old Kusanagi GoDo, it's that REALLY old time religion that's found him! As the result of defeating the God of War in mortal combat, GoDo's stuck with the unwanted position of Campione!, or God Slayer, whose duty is to fight Herectical Gods whenever they try to muscle in on the local turf. Not only is this likely to make GoDo roadkill on the Highway to Heaven, it's also a job that comes with a lot of other problems. Like how to deal with the fact that his "enhanced status" is attracting a bevy of overly-worshippy female followers. After all, they're just there to aid him in his demi-godly duties, right? So why is it that their leader, the demonically manipulative sword-mistress Erica Brandelli, seems to have such a devilish interest in encouraging some VERY unorthodox activities?

Where it came from
Campione! was produced by studio Diomedéa and premiered in 2012 as an anime adaptation of the light novel series written by Jō Taketsuki. The story centers on Godō Kusanagi, a high school student who unexpectedly becomes a 'Campione,' a god-slayer possessing the powers of defeated deities. The series blends mythological elements from various global pantheons with the tropes of the contemporary harem and action genres, reflecting a trend in early 2010s anime to elevate fantasy combat through supernatural protagonists.
The character designs were handled by Masakazu Ishikawa, who sought to translate the source material's dynamic action scenes and mythological imagery into a visual style consistent with the period's animation standards. Upon release, the series was noted for its ambitious premise of reconciling ancient legends with modern-day settings, though it garnered a mixed reception from critics who often debated the balance between its complex mythological world-building and the character-driven narrative structure inherent to its format.
