Where it came from
Carole & Tuesday was produced by Studio Bones to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the studio and the tenth anniversary of the music label FlyingDog. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, the series was designed to explore the intersection of human creativity and artificial intelligence within a futuristic musical landscape. The production focused on a globalized vision of art, featuring an international roster of songwriters to reflect the show's core theme of music as a universal language.
The aesthetic of the series is characterized by a vibrant, retro-futuristic depiction of a terraformed Mars, drawing inspiration from diverse musical genres ranging from folk to pop. Watanabe sought to capture the earnestness of the creative process, contrasting the raw, acoustic performance style of the protagonists against the sterile, machine-generated pop culture of the setting. Upon its release, the series received critical praise for its ambitious musical integration and its contemplative stance on the role of the artist in an automated society.
