Synopsis

In the Edo or Tokugawa period (1600-1868), Ran, a female wandering samurai whose skill with the katana is only matched by her taste for sake (rice wine), is joined by a chinese martial artist who calls herself Lady Meow of the Iron Cat Fist. Tsukikage Ran has individual episodes that are just short stories of their adventures.

Provenance

Where it came from

Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran was produced by the acclaimed animation studio Madhouse and directed by Akitaro Daichi. Released in 2000, the series was designed as a lighthearted, episodic homage to classic jidaigeki, or period samurai dramas, focusing on the wanderings of a skilled but indifferent ronin named Ran and her companion, a feline-wielding martial artist named Meow. The narrative style intentionally eschews the heavy, overarching drama common in the genre to favor a episodic, comedic approach that prioritizes character chemistry over complex plot arcs.

The character designs and animation reflect a minimalist, functional aesthetic that suits the show's road-trip structure. By stripping away dense exposition, the creative team aimed to capture the essence of a wandering samurai narrative with a refreshing sense of playfulness. Upon its reception, the series was noted for its sharp wit and unconventional protagonist, securing a modest but enduring reputation among fans of cult anime as a clever subversion of traditional samurai tropes.
