Cardfight!! Vanguard Extra Story -if-

Cardfight!! Vanguard Extra Story -if- was produced by studio OLM and broadcast in 2020 as a spin-off to the established Cardfight!! Vanguard franchise. The series serves as an alternate-universe retelling of the franchise's lore, created to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the trading card game property. By shifting away from the traditional competitive card-battling focus, the narrative explores a magical girl-inspired aesthetic combined with the series' familiar trading card mechanics, aiming to broaden the appeal of the brand to a wider demographic while maintaining continuity with established fan favorites.

The production team at OLM, known for their long-standing work on the franchise, sought to revitalize the series through a stylistic departure. The design and narrative direction were centered on a lighthearted, 'what-if' scenario, allowing the writers to reintroduce core characters like Aichi Sendou and Toshiki Kai in redesigned roles. Reception among the fanbase was nuanced; while some long-time players were surprised by the shift toward magical girl tropes and high-concept fantasy elements, the series is recognized for its willingness to experiment with the franchise's identity during its commemorative anniversary year.
