Where it came from
Carp Reborn, titled Mu Wang Zhi Wang in its original Chinese release, emerged from the burgeoning landscape of Chinese 3D animation spearheaded by the platform Bilibili. Released as a significant ONA project, it represents the studio's commitment to adapting expansive xianxia and wuxia literature into high-fidelity digital media, focusing on the intricate world-building and martial arts choreography that define the genre's popularity in domestic markets.
The series is celebrated for its technical ambition, utilizing sophisticated motion capture and dynamic rendering to bring its historical fantasy setting to life. While character designs reflect a stylistic blend of traditional period aesthetics and modern anime sensibilities, the production was met with appreciation for its visual polish and its attempt to translate the complex political and supernatural hierarchies of its source material for a contemporary streaming audience.
