Where it came from
Castle Town Dandelion, known in Japan as Joukamachi no Dandelion, was produced by Studio IMS and premiered in 2015. Adapted from the four-panel manga series by Ayumu Kasuga, the story follows the daily lives of the nine Sakurada siblings, who each possess unique supernatural abilities. The series originated within the slice-of-life comedy genre, focusing on the unique premise that the children are constantly monitored by hundreds of cameras as their father, the King, determines which of them will succeed him on the throne.
The anime was directed by Noriaki Akitaya, who sought to balance the supernatural elements with the relatable, humorous dynamics of a large family living under public scrutiny. Visually, the series utilizes a vibrant, polished aesthetic characteristic of mid-2010s comedy anime, emphasizing the distinct character designs of the siblings to highlight their individual powers and personalities. While it was received as a lighthearted and charming entry in the seasonal lineup, it remains notable for its specific focus on the intersection of reality-show-style surveillance and adolescent coming-of-age themes.
