Where it came from
Cat City, released as an original video animation in 2006, was produced by the Japanese studio Keica. The project emerged during a period of experimentation in digital animation within the independent studio scene, focusing on stylized, anthropomorphic character designs that leaned into a whimsical, surreal aesthetic. It serves as a brief but distinct example of the studio's early exploration of CGI integration into traditional 2D frameworks, aiming to create a self-contained narrative experience centered around feline-led urban environments.
The animation style is characterized by a deliberate departure from mainstream aesthetics, favoring a dreamlike, avant-garde tone that emphasizes atmosphere over complex plotting. While the title remains an obscure entry in the broader landscape of 2000s anime, it is recognized by collectors of underground or short-form animation for its unique visual signature. The work reflects the creative ambitions of Keica during their developmental years, showcasing a commitment to experimental storytelling that was intended for niche audiences interested in unconventional digital artistry.
