Where it came from
The Cat God, or Neko Kami, is an original net animation (ONA) series released in 2011, produced by the studio Emon and directed by Hiroaki Sakurai. Based on a manga series by Fuse, the work was conceived as a lighthearted, supernatural comedy centering on a deity who descends to the human world. The narrative fits within the early 2010s trend of anthropomorphic deity tropes, blending slice-of-life storytelling with gentle mythological references intended to appeal to a broad audience seeking whimsical escapism.
The character design for the title character and her supernatural companions was crafted to evoke a soft, approachable aesthetic, prioritizing expressive facial features and a distinctive color palette characteristic of the era's digital animation styles. Upon its release, the series was received primarily as a modest, niche production, appreciated by fans of low-stakes comedies for its quirky premise and the endearing nature of the titular protagonist, though it remains a relatively quiet entry in the vast landscape of online animation history.
