Where it came from
Released in 2014, the Chain Chronicle short animation was produced by Sotsu and animation studio Jumondou to serve as a promotional bridge for the popular mobile role-playing game developed by Sega. The project was conceived during the height of the game's popularity in Japan, intended to expand the reach of the franchise's expansive fantasy world by introducing viewers to the core narrative elements and character dynamics before the game's broader media expansion.
The animation reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the mid-2010s mobile game market, prioritizing fluid action sequences and character-focused storytelling. While designed to appeal primarily to the existing player base, the short was received as an effective aesthetic translation of the game's vibrant visual style. It served as a proof-of-concept for the property's potential in long-form media, eventually leading to a more comprehensive television series adaptation in later years.
