Where it came from
Chao Shen Xueyuan 2, also known as Super Seminary: Black Troop, serves as the second installment in the expansive 3D animated web series produced by the Chinese studio Hypergryph's affiliate, Super Seminary. The series was developed as a long-running ONA (Original Net Animation) project that blends elements of Chinese mythology with science fiction military concepts, essentially reimagining traditional folk figures like Sun Wukong within a futuristic, high-stakes galactic warfare setting.
The visual design and animation direction were handled by the internal creative teams at Super Seminary, who aimed to push the technical boundaries of domestic Chinese 3D animation during the mid-2010s. By moving away from traditional narrative tropes and embracing a darker, more tactical aesthetic, the series garnered a dedicated following among fans of military-themed science fiction. It is widely recognized for its transition from a lighthearted parody style into a more serious, narrative-driven space opera that defined the look of its franchise for years to come.
