Shibuya, Japan, 2008. Takumi Nishijou, a high school student at the Private Suimei Academy, one day hears about the 'New Gen' murders that have been occurring around the city. Although dismissing the subject because it doesn't involve him, Takumi begins to experience strange mishaps around him, from a horrific picture he received while on his PC, to a mysterious Pink-Haired girl standing at a murder scene.
From there on Takumi struggles to cope with the events unfolding around him, and is soon unaware of what is real or a delusion. As his fate opens up before him, the perpetrator behind the 'New Gen' events attempts to find him, leading him into a world where nothing is as it seems.

Where it came from
ChäoS;HEAd was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and premiered in 2008 as an adaptation of the visual novel developed by Nitroplus and 5pb. The series was conceived as the first installment in the Science Adventure series, intended to explore themes of psychological thrillers, delusion, and the intersection of technology and perception. The animation was directed by Takuya Satō, who aimed to translate the game's unsettling, surreal atmosphere into a television format by emphasizing the protagonist's fractured mental state.
Upon its release, the series became a subject of critical discussion for its departure from the source material’s intricate branching narrative structure. While it introduced the concept of 'real-booting'—the physical manifestation of illusions—to a wider audience, many viewers and critics found that the compressed pacing necessitated by the episode count struggled to capture the full complexity of the original visual novel's branching psychological horror. Despite these challenges, it remains a notable entry in late-2000s anime for its focus on paranoia and its lasting influence on the Science Adventure franchise.
