Charlotte

Charlotte was produced by P.A.Works and broadcast in 2015 as the second original anime project conceived by writer Jun Maeda in collaboration with Key. Building on the thematic framework of their earlier work, Angel Beats, the series explores the lives of adolescents who manifest temporary supernatural abilities upon reaching puberty. The narrative follows Yuu Otosaka, a student who uses his powers for personal gain until he is recruited into a student council tasked with managing other power-wielders, ultimately shifting from a episodic high-school drama into a more complex, high-stakes exploration of memory and sacrifice.

The character designs were overseen by Kanami Sekiguchi, who worked to balance the series' lighthearted aesthetic with the increasingly heavy emotional tone of the plot. Jun Maeda served as both the primary screenwriter and musical director, aiming to blend typical slice-of-life comedy tropes with a darker, supernatural mystery. Upon its release, the series received a mixed but passionate critical reception; while some reviewers praised its ambitious emotional scope and the high production quality synonymous with P.A.Works, others expressed reservations regarding the pacing of the latter half, noting that the compressed narrative timeline made the series' conclusion feel abrupt.
