Where it came from
Charmmy Kitty was introduced by Sanrio in 2004 as Hello Kitty's pet Persian cat, designed to embody a sense of regal refinement and companionship. Created as part of the broader Sanrio character universe, Charmmy was depicted as a gift from Hello Kitty’s father, wearing a lace-trimmed ribbon and a necklace that held the key to Hello Kitty's jewelry box, grounding her character design in the narrative of domestic affection.
The Charmmy & Friends OVA serves as a whimsical extension of this character line, focusing on the interactions between Charmmy and her small companion, Sugar, a hamster also gifted to Hello Kitty. Produced to expand the character’s presence beyond stationary and plush merchandise, the animation features a soft, pastel aesthetic characteristic of early 2000s Sanrio productions, aiming to capture the gentle, leisurely atmosphere of Hello Kitty’s daily life.
