Cheer Boys!!

Cheer Boys!!, or Cheer Danshi!!, originated as a light novel series by Ryo Asai, an author noted for his explorations of group dynamics and identity in youth athletics. The television anime adaptation was produced by studio Brain's Base in 2016 to capitalize on the unique premise of a male cheerleading team, a departure from the more common depictions of competitive sports anime. The production focused on the formation of the 'BREAKERS' squad at a university, aiming to blend the physical demands of stunting with a coming-of-age narrative centered on camaraderie and personal ambition.

The character designs were originally drafted by manga artist Hiroyuki Asada, known for his distinct, slender aesthetic. In the transition to the screen, these designs were adapted by Hitomi Tsuruta to ensure fluidity during the complex cheerleading choreography sequences. Upon its release, the series was received as a heartfelt contribution to the 'sports for boys' genre, appreciated for its earnest approach to a niche subculture that challenges traditional views on masculinity and teamwork.
