Where it came from
Chein Kuro-Nikuru!! was produced in 2017 by Studio PuYUKAI, a boutique animation studio renowned for its distinct chibi aesthetic and focus on comedic, short-form storytelling. The series emerged as part of a trend in Japanese animation where established franchises were adapted into abbreviated, humorous formats to engage fans through social media and web-based platforms, emphasizing character-driven gags over traditional narrative arcs.
The creative direction of the series was spearheaded by Minoru Ashina, a prominent figure in the 'puchichara' or miniature-character style of animation. Ashina’s design philosophy for this project was to distill the essential, recognizable personality traits of the characters into simplified, expressive forms. This stylistic choice was received as a lighthearted expansion of the franchise's universe, successfully bridging the gap between niche merchandising and digital broadcast media.
