Where it came from
The Cheer Danshi!! OVA was released in 2016 as a concluding supplement to the anime adaptation of Ryo Asai's novel series. The original story focuses on a group of male college students who form a cheerleading team, a narrative choice intended to subvert traditional sports anime tropes by highlighting male synchronicity and emotional vulnerability. The production was spearheaded by Brain's Base, which utilized the OVA format to provide closure to the character arcs established during the series' television run.
The visual design of the OVA maintains the aesthetic consistency of the series, emphasizing dynamic, fluid animation sequences to accurately portray the technical demands of cheerleading. It was received by fans as a warm, character-driven conclusion that deepened the bond between the protagonists, Haruki Bando and Kazuma Hashimoto. While the broader Cheer Danshi!! franchise is noted for its focus on unconventional sports, the OVA specifically served as a bridge between the intense competition of the main series and the personal growth of the team members.
