Momoko Sakura is an elementary school student who likes popular idol Momoe Yamaguchi and mangas. She is often called "Chibi Maruko-chan" due to her young age and small size. She lives together with her parents, her grandparents and her elder sister in a little town. In school, she has many friends with whom she studies and plays together everyday, including her close pal, Tama-chan; the student committee members, Maruo-kun and Migiwa-san; and the B-class trio: 'little master' Hanawa-kun, Hamaji-Bu Taro and Sekiguchi-kun. This is a fun-loving and enjoyable anime that portrays the simple things in life.

Where it came from
Chibi Maruko-chan, produced by Nippon Animation, began its iconic second television run in 1995. Based on the semi-autobiographical manga by Momoko Sakura, the series chronicles the humorous and heartwarming daily life of a young girl nicknamed Maruko and her family in 1970s suburban Shizuoka. The animation style intentionally mirrors the simplicity and charm of Sakura’s original illustrations, focusing on character-driven comedy rather than elaborate spectacle.
The 1995 series became a cornerstone of Japanese pop culture, celebrated for its relatable portrayal of childhood and the eccentricities of the Sakura household. Sakura herself was deeply involved in the production, ensuring the tone remained faithful to her vision. Upon release, the show achieved massive success, cementing itself as one of the highest-rated anime in history and maintaining a consistent presence in Japanese homes for decades due to its nostalgic appeal and enduring wit.
