Chibi Maruko-chan Movie: Italia Kara Kita Shounen

Released in 2015 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the anime series, Chibi Maruko-chan: Italia kara Kita Shounen served as the third theatrical feature in the franchise's history. Produced by Nippon Animation and directed by Jun Takagi, the film was designed to bridge the gap between the nostalgic charm of Momoko Sakura's original manga and a modern cinematic experience. The narrative follows Maruko as she hosts a group of international students, focusing on her budding friendship with an Italian boy named Andrea, a departure from the typical localized slice-of-life adventures seen in the long-running television series.

The film's visual identity remains deeply rooted in the established aesthetic of the Chibi Maruko-chan universe, prioritizing the simplistic, expressive character designs that defined the series since its 1990 debut. While the movie was produced under the watchful eye of series creator Momoko Sakura, who also wrote the screenplay, the production aimed for a more expansive scope by taking the characters out of their familiar Shizuoka setting. Upon its release, it was well-received by domestic audiences as a heartfelt tribute to the longevity of the series, successfully blending sentimental themes of cultural exchange with the familiar comedic beats that established the franchise as a staple of Japanese television.
